Welcome to the study of the Old Testament versus the New Testament. Today, we will dive into the topic of tithing, exploring its meaning, purpose, and various types.
Tithing, as we understand it, refers to offering one-tenth of the produce from the land. This includes:
- Grains,
- Livestock,
- Fruits.
- Etc.
In Deuteronomy 14:22, it is stated that the people of Israel were instructed to tithe the increase of their grain annually, emphasizing the importance of this practice.
Further, Leviticus 27:30 and 32 reinforce the concept of tithing, stating that all tithes from the land, whether seed or fruit, are holy to the Lord. This highlights the significance of tithing as a sacred obligation.
In the context of the land of Canaan, which was promised to the children of Israel as a land flowing with milk and honey, tithing was a fundamental aspect of their relationship with God. It symbolized gratitude and acknowledgment of God’s provision.
However, in contemporary times, the practice of tithing may vary among Christian churches. As we continue our discussion in subsequent videos, we will explore these differences and provide insight into the true essence of tithing.
